Learn the simple steps to keep your merino wool tee soft, odor-free, and long-lasting. Avoid shrinking and damage with proper washing and drying techniques.
Quick answer
Wash your merino wool tees infrequently, by hand or on a gentle machine cycle with cold water and a wool-specific detergent. Always lay them flat to dry away from heat to prevent shrinking.
Why merino wool needs special care
Merino wool fibers are naturally fine and elastic, which makes them soft against the skin but also more delicate than synthetic or cotton tees. Aggressive washing, high heat, or harsh detergents can break these fibers, leading to shrinkage, pilling, or a rough texture. The good news is merino wool resists odors and stains better than most fabrics, so you can wear a tee several times before it needs a wash—this actually extends its life.
How to wash and care for your merino wool tee
- 1. Wash only when needed: Merino wool naturally resists odors. After a light wear, air out the tee instead of washing. Only wash when it's visibly dirty or smells. This reduces wear on the fibers and saves water. Airing out between wears is the best first step.
- 2. Turn the tee inside out: Before washing, turn your merino tee inside out. This protects the outer surface from friction against other clothes or the machine drum, reducing pilling and snags.
- 3. Use cold water and wool detergent: Fill a sink or basin with cold water (below 86°F / 30°C) and add a small amount of wool-specific detergent. Submerge the tee, gently swish it for a few minutes, then let it soak for 10-15 minutes. Avoid wringing or scrubbing. Never use fabric softener or bleach—they coat the fibers and ruin their natural properties.
- 4. Rinse with cold water: Drain the soapy water and refill the basin with clean cold water. Gently press the tee to release soap, repeat until no suds remain. Lift the tee out carefully—wet wool is heavy and can stretch if you pull it.
- 5. Remove excess water without wringing: Lay the wet tee flat on a clean towel, roll it up, and press gently to absorb moisture. Never twist or wring the fabric, as this distorts the fibers and causes permanent stretching.
- 6. Lay flat to dry away from heat: Unroll the towel and place the tee on a fresh dry towel or a drying rack in a well-ventilated area out of direct sunlight. Reshape it gently to its original size. Never hang it—gravity will stretch the wet fabric. Never use a dryer, radiator, or hair dryer. Drying flat is the single most important step to maintain the fit of your merino tee.
- 7. Store folded, not hung: Once fully dry, fold your merino tee and store it in a drawer or shelf. Hanging can cause the shoulders to stretch over time. If you must hang it, use a padded hanger and fold the tee over the bar.
